The Biblical Basis of Our Assurance in Christ

Suppose someone asks you if you are absolutely certain that when you die you will go to heaven. Suppose you are asked if you believe that you, as a saved person, shall never under any circumstances lose your salvation. You answer "Yes, I am certain. Yes, I am assured of my salvation and that I shall not lose it." Then the person asks you why you so believe. How would you answer that question?

True, the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and that witness gives us assurance. But the Spirit has revealed to us objective reasons to hold to assurance. Our security does not rest in subjective experience but in the certainty of the Word of God. If the Bible is true, then clear teaching of Scripture, seen in a number of epitomizing passages, shows that a true child of God cannot be lost.

Scripture teaches that our security rests in the edicts and decrees of Almighty God, in His eternal and immutable purpose. That purpose, manifested in these unconditional decrees, establishes our election, our calling and regeneration, and our adoption as children of God. Our salvation was accomplished by Jesus Christ in his death on the cross, and it abounds to the good pleasure and eternal glory of God.
