Isaiah 5:11-13, “Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them! They have lyre and harp, tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts, but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord, or see the work of his hands.” These words of Isaiah are sobering, and sobering is an appropriate word in this context. Men characteristically yield to their own pleasures with no thought to the source of all they have. The quest of humanity is to have fun, but not to glorify the God who provides everything, including life itself. Paul issued a scathing indictment of mankind in Romans 1:20 when he elaborated on this truth taught by Isaiah in these words: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Perhaps no more fitting conclusion can be found to our lengthy study of God’s providence as symbolized in His hand than William Cowper’s wonderful hymn: “God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform; he plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. “Deep in unfathomable mines of never ending skill he treasures up his bright designs, and works his sovereign will. “Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take: the clouds ye so much dread are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head. “Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust him for his grace; behind a frowning providence he hides a smiling face. “His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding ev’ry hour; the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flow’r. “Blind unbelief is sure to err; and scan his work in vain; God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain.” |
