Paul continues by exhorting them to continue to live in Christ just as they have received Him, rooted, built up, strengthened in faith, overflowing with thankfulness, and careful to avoid deceptive teachers who present doctrines based on the rudimentary principles rather than Christ. At this point he returns to the important truth that Christ is the fullness of God, but he is more descriptive. He says that the very fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form. Thus to know Christ is to know everything about divinity, everything about God. But this knowledge is not an elusive shadowy concept; rather, it is a reality that every Christian can experience. Paul adds in verse 10 that “you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over all power and authority.” We experience in Christ what it is to know God, and we become in Christ complete. Paul is not saying that we become divine and take our place in the Trinity. But what he says is that we share and experience and live out Christ. Christ in us means that, as Peter says, we are partakers of the divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4). This is a thought that has not been contemplated or taught sufficiently, yet it should be. Knowing God and having Christ in us is more than an intellectual exercise; it is a living reality that empowers, delights, encourages, and transforms us! |
