Why did Christ Have to Die?, Part 9 PDF Print E-mail

We began this series of devotional articles to provide an answer to a question submitted by a young Christian when someone made the statement that he did not understand why a blood sacrifice was necessary to remove sin, thus why it was necessary for Christ to die.  He did not question the Bible and knew that Scripture taught such a need, but he confessed that he could not understand why.

Because the question deserved a rather thorough answer, I sent that to him by way of email.  But because of its importance and the fact that there are probably many Christians with unclear or hazy views on the matter, I have divided that answer into the last eight devotional articles for the benefit of our subscribers.  As always, please feel free to use this material in any way that you think will bless and inform people you know and love.

But what if time does not allow a thorough response?  Is there a quick summation that we could provide in the context of a discussion with someone?  The following is offered with the prayer that it will be of help in such a circumstance:

1)    God is holy and any unholiness cannot come into His presence.
2)    Man is not holy; he is a sinner.
3)    The penalty for sin is death.
4)    It is a penalty that man cannot pay and still survive.
5)    God graciously allows the payment to be made by a substitute.
6)    Christ lived a life of perfect obedience, and his sacrifice was accepted by God, evidenced by His resurrection.
7)    In all the universe there cannot be found another acceptable sacrifice than that of the God-man, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and God incarnate.
8)    Thus all those who trust in Christ are pardoned from all sin by the effects of His death (His blood), and clothed with perfect righteousness forever.
