If salvation may be viewed as a gate, an archway, that bids us on one side come and taste the free gift of the water of life, and on the other side shows us the hand of God in the whole process, then from our standpoint we can recognize certain changes in our lives.  These we have examined the last few weeks.

At some point we come to recognize that God is, that Jesus is the Son of God, and that we have offended God by our neglect of Him and our disobedience to His will.  We are convicted in heart and become truly sorry for this attitude and way of life and undergo a change of mind.  We are aware that we need help, for we are in a situation from which we cannot extricate ourselves and without resources, and we are also aware that Jesus, the Son of God, has paid the price for our sin and rebellion.  Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: He is the answer to the great dilemma we face.

Thus we trust Him.  We put our faith in Him.  We leave our whole salvation in His hands.  We trust that He will pay for our sins and grant us right standing with God once and for all.  We are willing to trust nothing or no one else: not our own good works, not our church or pastor, not anyone else’s efforts…just Jesus Christ.  He alone stands between us and our eternal destiny.  He now becomes the focal point and rationale for our lives.  We are ready to take from his hands the peace and joy that He offers, and we are willing to take up His cross and suffer for him.

We are also eager and ready to acknowledge our faith publicly in the ways that God has said will honor and glorify Him, by confession, baptism, communion, worship, prayer, and godly living.  We can see a change in our lives, and it is wonderful.  We understand that there is no going back.  Our wills are different, and we see everything differently.  We are saved!

But as we pass under this archway of salvation and turn to look back at the inscription on the other side, we come to understand why all this has happened in our lives.  It is God, it is His grace and mercy, and it was never we ourselves.  To this subject we turn in our next devotional.
