No book of the Bible compares with Paul’s letter to the Galatians as regards passion and feeling. The Holy Spirit assigned to the apostle Paul the responsibility of defending the very essence of the gospel, rooted in the free grace of God, written in the blood of Christ, and given totally apart from law in accordance with the ancient promise to Abraham. Paul presents to the Galatian Christians a vivid and stark contrast between law and gospel, between the work of the Holy Spirit and works of human obedience, between bondage and freedom. To add the necessity of our performance to the finished work of Christ is, to Paul, a false gospel that denies the very concept of grace and renders the sacrifice of Christ meaningless. No Christian today should claim to understand the gospel before digesting Paul’s brilliant argument for justification by faith alone in the Galatian letter.
