Christ Our Comfort PDF Print E-mail

One of the most beautiful and memorable expressions of the glory and blessing of our redemption in Christ is contained in the first question of the Heidelberg Catechism: "What is thy only comfort in life and death?  That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him."

The Heidelberg Catechism was published in 1563, written by two young men still in their twenties: Kaspar Olevianus and Zacharias Ursinus, in the hope of providing a basis for unity between the Reformed and Lutheran churches in Germany.  It still speaks to the current age the message of the wonder and glory of the gospel of grace, in language that itself is gracious and encourages believers to put aside their sectarian and fractious spirit and unite on the basis of the great spiritual blessings and promises we have in Christ.

Engedi Ministries is pleased to offer this series, its title derived from the first question and itself an analysis of the Heidelberg Catechism, with an explanation in terms understandable to twenty-first century Christians, with the same desire and prayer, that we may join hands and hearts together in the shadow of the cross and, as needy sinners who bring nothing of merit, accept with humility the salvation of Christ.  (Dr. Lawrence presents this study in 12 lessons)
