The courageous life of Martin Luther, the careful Biblical scholarship of John Calvin, the freeing of England from papal domination, and the spread of Reformed teaching throughout Europe and the New World produced a major change in the lives of millions of people. The old, universal Latin church was gone, and in its place an ever-increasing number of Christian denominations, each with a particular interpretation of truth. The effect on society was enormous, and the whole process of theological change played a major role in shaping the direction of modern Western civilization. This series of twelve lectures traces the development of Christian thought and the growth of denominations and Christian movements from Luther’s time to the present. The first six lectures deal with the emergence of the Evangelical churches and the changes in the Roman Church in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and are presented by Dr. David Lawrence. The last six follow the history of Christianity in America and are presented by Dr. Richard Goode.
