The Hand of God, Part 7: The Hand of the Lord is Victorious Over Enemies

By Dr. David Lawrence

Ex. 15: 6-7, 16-18, " Your right hand, O Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.  In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble. … Terror and dread will fall upon them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone — until your people pass by, O Lord, until the people you bought pass by. You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance — the place, O Lord, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, your hands established.  The Lord will reign for ever and ever." Thus with The great new song of victory sung by Moses and Miriam after God’s mighty deliverance of Israel from Egyptian bondage, we begin the study of God’s ultimate and final victory over all his enemies. Yes, it shall happen!

1 Sam. 7:13, “Throughout Samuel's lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. The towns from Ekron to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to her, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the power of the Philistines.” God demonstrated this great truth over the Philistines, and He would later over Assyrians, Babylonians, Macedonians, and Romans. Any force that identifies itself as an enemy of God shall meet its justice and destruction, whether an idolatrous nation or an atheistic philosophy.

Psalm 44:2-4, “ You with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob!” God’s hand is raised against His enemies for the sake of His people in whom He delights. It is never the strength of God’s own people that saves them; nothing but sheer mercy and grace. Otherwise, we would be God’s enemies!

Jeremiah 21:4-6 "Thus you shall say to Zedekiah, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. And I will bring them together into the midst of this city. I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand and strong arm, in anger and in fury and in great wrath. And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence.” Zedekiah of Judah learned the hard way that when God’s people are disobedient, God may treat them as He does His enemies! One does not resist the sovereign will of God, which in this instance provided that the Babylonians would take Jerusalem. (See also Ezek. 13:8-10 when God’s prophets make themselves His enemies)
