Question: “I want to start by saying that I know this might be a question that can’t be answered…but it is something that I think about a lot so take it as you want to. Why do you think that we as Christians are best known for being very judgmental and critical of others, yet we are the ones who are called to model after a man who loved and accepted EVERYONE no matter their situation. Do you think we have lost sight of who Jesus really was and what our mission here on earth is (which I believe is to show others who Jesus was through our words and actions)?”
Answer: To the question that asks why we as Christians are known for being judgmental when we are called to model Christ, I can only say that we are still sinners who struggle with a fallen nature. We are being sanctified, but we are not completely sanctified while in this life. I would hope that judgmental Christians will, in the process of their sanctification, come to repent of this terrible sin. In the process of coming to know Christ, as Paul so earnestly desired for himself (Phil. 3:10), we shall all know his love, acceptance, and compassion and be led to model it in our lives.
In answer to the second part about whether we have lost sight of who Jesus was and what our mission on earth is – to show others who Jesus was in our words and actions – I would say possibly we have, but more likely we have not yet learned. Thus it is so very important that the gospel and the life and teachings of Christ be presented continually to Christians, for we are very slow learners, and we do indeed tend to forget. We are rather stupid and rebellious sheep, yet we are His sheep who are destined for eternal life. The Holy Spirit does not have an easy job with any of us to create the image of Christ in us. However, it is to the glory of God that He can take sinful and rebellious people who are so slow to learn and remember and make them into replicas of His holy Son!
