The Holiness of God

Dr. David Lawrence, teacher
  TOPIC

We sing it in our hymns: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty…”, “We are standing on holy ground...", “Holy is the Lord,” and so many more. But do we understand what holy means? Do we understand what it means for God to be holy?

To us holy is a nice, comfortable, warm term. It makes God sound good. We like the idea of a holy God because that makes Him appear pure, kind, and good. But is this idea what the Bible conveys? Indeed it is not, for the Bible presents the concept of the holy in very different terms. When people in the Bible record actually confronted the holiness of God, they were anything but comfortable.

Holiness is not just one attribute of God. It is not that God is holy along with being righteous, just, good, and merciful. Holiness defines God, and to understand God’s holiness is to confront God, and to confront God is to confront ourselves. The result of understanding who we really are is the key that will drive us to the cross of Christ where we find the answer to the dilemma of holiness.

If we do not understand the holiness of God, we do not really understand God. And if we do not really understand God, we shall never understand fully our salvation. Yet the topic of the holiness of God is so sadly neglected in our churches today that few people have ever heard a sermon on or been through a thorough study of the topic.

It is timely and important that Engedi Ministries makes this study available as the topic for its fall class. This study will take you into depths you probably never explored, and through theological passageways that will open up to you vistas you never conceived before to exist. We are excited about offering this class, and yet we approach it with fear and trepidation, because it is so profound and awesome. Like the word of God penetrating to the dividing of joints and marrow and judging the very thoughts and intents of the heart, the study of the holiness of God goes deep into the human soul and mind and heart and searches out our inmost thoughts and intents.

We encourage you to join us for this spiritual adventure. You will be welcome, you will enjoy the fellowship, and you will come away with a deeper understanding of and reverence for Holy God.
